Identification

The Bronzed Drongo is a small, compact bird somewhat smaller than the Black Drongo, with striking metallic gloss and a spangled appearance across the head, neck, and breast. The lores are velvety black, while the ear coverts are duller. Its most distinctive feature is a slender, well-forked tail with outer feathers that flare slightly outward. Immature birds show white tips on their axillaries and are generally duller and brownish with less spangling than adults.

Range & Habitat

The Bronzed Drongo is a resident species across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, found in the Western and Eastern Ghats of India, the lower Himalayas from western Uttaranchal eastward through Indochina and Hainan, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and northern Borneo, with an isolated population in Taiwan's mountains. This species is exclusively forest-dependent, showing a strong preference for moist broadleaved forests and is never encountered in open country or heavily disturbed areas.

Behaviour & Diet

Bronzed Drongos are typically found singly or in small groups of two to three birds. They are active foragers, capturing insects in flight by making repeated aerial sallies from favored perches within the forest canopy—a hunting technique they employ with impressive agility in shaded understory conditions. Occasionally they join mixed-species foraging flocks. Like other drongos, they are accomplished mimics, capable of reproducing the calls of many other bird species. They breed from February to July, constructing cup nests in trees decorated with cobwebs that give them a distinctive whitish appearance. Females lay three or four pinkish to brownish eggs, darkened on the broad end and often marked with cloudy spots. Despite their small stature at 24 cm in length, these are remarkably aggressive and fearless birds that will boldly attack much larger species to defend their nests and young.

Best Time & Places to See It

The breeding season from February to July offers the best opportunity to locate Bronzed Drongos, as birds are more active and vocal near their nesting territories. Look for them in primary and mature secondary moist broadleaved forests throughout their range, particularly in the Western and Eastern Ghats of India, the lower Himalayan foothills, and Southeast Asian forests from Myanmar through Borneo. Patient observation of the mid-canopy and understory levels, where they make their characteristic hunting sallies, will reward you with sightings of this forest specialist.

Photography Tips

Photographing Bronzed Drongos requires patience and attention to their favored perching spots, as they return repeatedly to the same vantage points between foraging flights. Position yourself with a clear view of the mid-canopy where they hunt, using fast shutter speeds (at least 1/2000s) to freeze their quick aerial maneuvers. Early morning and late afternoon light will best showcase the metallic gloss and spangling on the head and breast that distinguishes this species. When photographing nesting birds, maintain a respectful distance and approach slowly, as these birds are aggressive defenders of their territories and may attack if they feel threatened.
