Coppersmith Barbet

Identification

The coppersmith barbet is a compact, distinctive bird measuring 15–17 cm in length and weighing 30–52.6 g. Its most striking features are its vivid crimson forehead and throat, which contrast beautifully with its predominantly green plumage. Yellow cheeks and a yellow throat add further colour, while the underparts are streaked in grey and black. During the nesting season, wear on the feathers of the upper back can create a temporary bluish appearance, adding subtle variation to its already eye-catching appearance.

Range & habitat

The coppersmith barbet is a resident bird throughout the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, with nine recognized subspecies distributed across the region. One subspecies ranges from northeastern Pakistan to Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam and Singapore, while others are found across the Philippines, Java, Bali and Sumatra. In the Indian subcontinent, it occurs in the valleys of the outer Himalayas up to 910 m, and in the Palni Hills below 1,200 m, though it remains rare in northwestern Indian states and wet forests in Assam.

Throughout its range, the bird inhabits gardens, groves and sparse woodland. Habitats with dead wood are particularly important, as the species relies on these for excavating nest cavities. Its range overlaps with several larger barbet species across South Asia, including the Malabar barbet in the Western Ghats.

Behaviour & diet

The coppersmith barbet is best known for its extraordinary call—a loud, metallic tuk-tuk-tuk that resembles a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer, giving the bird its common name. This metronomic call is repeated monotonously for extended periods at a tempo of 108 to 121 beats per minute, sometimes reaching as many as 204 notes. Remarkably, the beak remains shut during calling; instead, a patch of bare skin on both sides of the throat inflates and collapses like a rubber bulb with each note while the head bobs rhythmically. The bird is silent in winter.

Predominantly frugivorous, the coppersmith barbet consumes nearly 1.5 to nearly 3 times its own body weight in berries daily, showing a particular preference for banyan, peepul and other wild figs, along with various drupes and berries. It also feeds on flower petals and occasionally catches insects in aerial sallies, particularly winged termites. The bird lives solitary or in small groups, though larger gatherings occasionally occur in abundantly fruiting fig trees. It carves out holes inside trees to build its nest, which it also uses for roosting. Competition with other cavity-nesting birds can be intense; blue-throated barbets have been observed evicting coppersmith barbets from nest holes, while red-vented bulbuls engage in kleptoparasitism, robbing males of berries intended for nesting females.

Best time & places to see it

Coppersmith barbets can be found year-round throughout their range, but they are most vocal and active during breeding season, which varies by location: primarily February to April in India and December to September in Sri Lanka. Look for them in gardens, groves and open woodland areas with mature trees. Early morning is particularly rewarding, as the birds are fond of sunning themselves on bare top branches of tall trees, often flitting about in small groups. Listen for the distinctive metallic call, which will lead you to the bird's location. Areas with fig trees in fruit are especially productive.

Photography tips

The coppersmith barbet's brilliant red head, yellow cheeks and green back make it highly photogenic. Position yourself early in the morning when birds are sunning on exposed top branches—this provides excellent lighting and clear sightlines. The bird's habit of bobbing its head and puffing its throat during calling creates dynamic posing opportunities. Use a telephoto lens (at least 300–500 mm) to capture detail without disturbing the bird. Since they are cavity nesters, watch for birds entering and exiting nest holes in suitable dead wood. The contrast between the red head and green body is most vibrant in clear, natural light, so overcast days are preferable to harsh midday sun.
