Crimson-backed Tanager

Identification

The crimson-backed tanager is a striking small tanager measuring around 18 cm in length. The adult male is unmistakable, with a maroon-red head and chest that brightens to brilliant red on the lower back and abdomen, while its wings and tail are jet black. A distinctive silver sheen adorns the lower mandible, adding to its jewel-like appearance. Females are considerably duller, with blackish underparts and less vibrant plumage, making them more subdued in forest settings.

Range & Habitat

This species is endemic to northern South America and Central America, occurring in Colombia, Panama, and Venezuela. In Colombia, it is found in the north and west, becoming uncommon in the southern region of Chocó. In Venezuela, it inhabits the Maracaibo Basin. Throughout most of Panama it is widespread, extending westward to Chiriquí and Veraguas Provinces, and notably abundant on the island of Coiba and the Pearl Islands. The species was also introduced to French Polynesia. It favours subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, scrubby habitats, and cultivated gardens, including heavily degraded former forest areas.

Behaviour & Diet

Little detailed information is published on this species' behaviour and feeding ecology. A nest with a clutch of two blue eggs marked with fine dark dots has been recorded. A parasitological study of blood samples found that the species can carry Plasmodium parasites, though at comparatively low infection rates, indicating generally good health in studied populations.

Best Time & Places to See It

The crimson-backed tanager is most reliably encountered in Panama, particularly on Coiba Island where it is abundant, and throughout the Pearl Islands. The species also occurs in accessible lowland forest and scrub habitats across its range in Colombia and Venezuela. Its presence in gardens and degraded forest edges makes it possible to encounter outside pristine wilderness areas, potentially increasing sighting opportunities for travellers.

Photography Tips

The male's brilliant crimson and black plumage creates striking contrast and photographs exceptionally well in bright tropical light. Early morning sessions will capture the most vibrant colours and the characteristic silver sheen on the lower mandible. The species' willingness to inhabit gardens and forest edges offers accessible photography opportunities compared to deep forest specialists. Position yourself with light from behind or to the side of the bird to enhance the red tones, and watch for perching behaviour in open areas where backgrounds remain uncluttered.
