Identification

The crimson sunbird is a tiny jewel of a bird, measuring just 11 cm in length. Males are unmistakable, displaying a brilliant crimson breast and maroon back adorned with distinctive black malar stripes, while the rump glows yellow and the belly is olive-coloured. Females are more subdued, with an olive-green back, yellowish breast, and white tips to their outer tail feathers. Both sexes possess the characteristic features of nectar-feeding specialists: medium-length, thin down-curved bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues perfectly adapted for extracting nectar from flowers. In most populations, males sport an elongated green-blue tail, though birds from the Nicobar Islands lack these extended central tail feathers. Their call is a distinctive chee-cheewee.

Range & Habitat

This species is a resident breeder across tropical southern Asia, with a range extending from India through Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar to Indonesia and Brunei. The crimson sunbird is a versatile species, occurring in both forest environments and cultivated areas, making it adaptable to human-modified landscapes. Breeding birds construct suspended nests in trees, typically laying two or three eggs.

Behaviour & Diet

As members of the sunbird family, crimson sunbirds feed largely on nectar, accessing flowers with their specialised bills and tubular tongues. While nectar forms the bulk of their diet, they also take insects, particularly when feeding their young—a crucial source of protein for developing chicks. Despite their tiny size, these birds are remarkably agile fliers, moving with fast and direct flight on their characteristically short wings. Like hummingbirds, they can hover while feeding, though they typically prefer to perch while extracting nectar from flowers.

The crimson sunbird's year-round residency across its range means it can be encountered throughout the year in suitable habitats. Within their broad Asian range spanning from India to Indonesia and Brunei, travellers should explore forest edges, gardens, and cultivated areas where flowering plants are abundant. As resident breeders, populations are stable, making sightings relatively reliable in appropriate habitat. The species has particular cultural significance in Singapore, where it holds the status of unofficial national bird as declared by the Nature Society Singapore.

Position yourself near flowering plants and trees that attract nectar-feeding birds, particularly during peak flowering periods. The male's brilliant crimson and maroon plumage makes for striking photographs, especially when backlit to highlight the iridescent colours. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the bird's rapid movements, particularly when hovering or in flight. Since they often perch while feeding, you may find opportunities to capture perched birds with better detail than hovering shots.
