Eastern Kingbird

Identification

The eastern kingbird is a medium-sized tyrant flycatcher measuring 19–23 cm in length with a wingspan of 33–38 cm and weighing 33–55 g. Adults are distinctively grey-black on the upperparts with contrasting light underparts, featuring a long black tail tipped with white and characteristically long, pointed wings. Most notably, they possess a hidden red patch on their crown that is seldom visible in the field. The bird's distinctive call is a high-pitched, buzzing, and unmusical chirp—a sound frequently likened to an electric fence—making it recognizable even when out of sight.

Range & Habitat

Eastern kingbirds are native to the Americas and are highly migratory. Their breeding habitat spans open areas across North America, where they favour landscapes with scattered trees and bushes that provide ideal perching spots for foraging. They construct sturdy cup nests in trees or shrubs, and occasionally on stumps or poles. During winter, the species migrates in flocks to Central and South America. The bird is occasionally recorded far outside its normal range; notably, three European records exist from the British Isles—two sightings in Ireland (October 2012 and September 2013) and one in Scotland (September 2016).

Behaviour & Diet

Eastern kingbirds are conspicuous and famously aggressive defenders of their territory, actively mobbing much larger birds to protect their nests and young. Both sexes participate in nest defense, though nesting strategy varies by individual—some birds place nests openly where they can spot approaching predators early, while others conceal nests in vegetation. Research has shown that their aggressive mobbing behaviour effectively deters ravens and crows from finding kingbird nests. Principal predators include blue jays, American crows, squirrels, tree-climbing snakes, and American kestrels.

Regarding diet, eastern kingbirds typically wait on an open perch and sally forth to catch insects in flight, sometimes hovering to pluck prey from vegetation. In their wintering grounds, they supplement their diet with berries and fruit, becoming more frugivorous during these months.

Best Time & Places to See It

Eastern kingbirds are best observed during their breeding season across North America in open habitats featuring scattered trees and shrubs. Their conspicuous behaviour and frequent vocalizations make them relatively easy to locate in suitable habitat. Look for them perched prominently on branches, wires, and exposed snags where they hunt for flying insects.

Photography Tips

The bird's contrasting plumage—dark upperparts and pale underparts—and distinctive silhouette with pointed wings make it relatively straightforward to photograph. Photograph them during their active foraging periods when they sally out from perches to catch insects, capturing their characteristic aerial hunting behaviour. The hidden red crown patch is rarely visible, but patient observation might reveal it during aggressive territorial displays. Their preference for open perches means you can often position yourself with good lighting and clear backgrounds.
