Eurasian Oystercatcher

Identification

The Eurasian oystercatcher is one of the largest waders in its region, measuring 40–45 cm in length with a wingspan of 80–85 cm. It is unmistakable with its striking black and white plumage, long straight orange-red bill (8–9 cm), red eyes, and relatively short dull pink legs. In flight, white patches on the wings and tail contrast sharply with otherwise black upperparts and white underparts. The sexes are similar in appearance, though females have noticeably longer bills than males. Winter plumage differs slightly from breeding plumage in featuring a white throat collar, particularly visible in immature birds. Young birds are more brown overall with a white neck collar and duller bill. The call is a distinctive loud piping that makes this noisy bird easy to locate.

Bill shape varies among individuals due to feeding specialization and wear patterns. Some birds develop broad bill tips suited to prising open molluscs or hammering through shells, while others develop pointed bills for digging up worms. Individual oystercatchers typically specialize in one technique, learning their preferred feeding method from their parents. The species shows clinal variation in bill length, increasing from west to east across its range.

Range & Habitat

The Eurasian oystercatcher is the most widespread of all oystercatcher species, with four recognized subspecies breeding across western Europe, central Eurosiberia, Kamchatka, China, and the western coast of Korea. No other oystercatcher occurs within this vast range. The European population breeds mainly in northern Europe but winters in north Africa and southern parts of Europe. The species is present year-round in Ireland, Great Britain, and adjacent European coasts, though significant migratory movements occur; large flocks found in south-west English estuaries during winter often breed in northern England or Scotland. Asian populations show similar migratory patterns. Birds are highly gregarious outside the breeding season and are commonly found in lowland plains below 200 meters elevation that are flat, have short vegetation, and lie close to water.

Behaviour & Diet

Despite its name, oysters do not form a large part of this bird's diet, though few other wading birds are capable of opening them. The oystercatcher's strong, broad red bill is primarily used for smashing or prising open molluscs such as mussels, or for finding earthworms. The mating system is monogamous with pair-bonds typically lasting many years. Birds first breed between three and five years of age and raise only one brood per season. Nests are bare scrapes on pebbles, either on the coast or on inland gravelly islands. Two to four eggs are laid and incubated by both parents for 24–27 days before hatching synchronously. Young are precocial and nidifugous, leaving the nest after one or two days and being fed by both parents.

Both parents fiercely defend their nest and eggs, attacking aerial predators like ravens while using distraction displays against ground threats, with males typically standing guard and reacting first. The pair vocalizes repeatedly to lure threats away, sometimes making short low distraction flights or feigning injury, though they gradually become accustomed to repeated human exposure.

Best Time & Places to See It

Winter months are excellent for observing large flocks of Eurasian oystercatchers, particularly in estuaries of south-west England and other coastal areas of Europe. Northern breeding areas provide good opportunities during the breeding season, with birds notably present in Scotland and northern England in summer. The species' year-round presence in Ireland and Great Britain makes these locations reliable destinations. Lowland coastal plains and gravelly islands with short vegetation adjacent to water bodies offer the best habitat for locating this highly visible and vocal wader.
