The ferruginous duck is a medium-sized diving duck that is instantly recognizable by its striking plumage and distinctive eye color. Breeding males display rich, dark chestnut coloring on the head, breast, and flanks, contrasting sharply with pure white undertail coverts. In flight, the white belly and underwing patch become visible, aiding identification. Females are considerably duller and browner than males, lacking the vibrant chestnut tones. The most reliable field mark for separating sexes is eye color: males possess a bright yellow eye, while females have a dark eye, giving this species one of its alternative common names, the white-eyed pochard.
Range & Habitat
This Palearctic native has a broad breeding range extending from Iberia and the Maghreb east to western Mongolia, and south to Arabia, though it has become scarce and localized in western parts of its range, with local extinctions in some countries. The species prefers shallow freshwater bodies rich in submerged and floating vegetation, with dense emergent vegetation along margins. In some regions, it adapts to saline or brackish pools and wetlands. During passage and winter months, ferruginous ducks also frequent coastal waters, inland seas, and large open lagoons. Birds winter throughout the Mediterranean Basin and the Black Sea, with smaller numbers migrating into sub-Saharan Africa via the Nile Valley, while eastern populations winter in south and southeast Asia.
Behaviour & Diet
Ferruginous ducks are gregarious birds, though less social than other Aythya species. Where common, they form large winter flocks, often mixing with other diving ducks such as tufted ducks and common pochards. Pairs form from January onwards, and during courtship, males perform a distinctive display by curling their tails so the white undertail coverts dip into the water, creating a triangular patch. In protected areas where the species is common, such as islands, they nest colonially, often alongside gulls. Where scarce, they nest singly in concealed sites. Eggs are laid from late April or early May in ground nests near water or in floating structures among emergent vegetation, with an incubation period of 25-27 days and a fledging period of 55-60 days. These ducks feed primarily by diving or dabbling, consuming aquatic plants supplemented with molluscs, aquatic insects, and small fish, with feeding activity often concentrated at night.
Best Time & Places to See It
Winter months offer the best opportunities to observe ferruginous ducks, particularly throughout the Mediterranean Basin and the Black Sea region, where they congregate in larger numbers. Protected wetland sites with shallow waters and abundant vegetation are prime locations. For those seeking breeding birds, visit protected island sites during the breeding season from late April through summer. The species' preference for specific habitat types—shallow waters with rich vegetation—makes carefully selected freshwater wetlands and lagoons the most productive viewing areas.
Photography Tips
Photograph breeding males in good light to capture the rich chestnut coloring and striking white undertail coverts that make this species so distinctive. The yellow eye of males is a key identifying feature worth highlighting in close-up shots. In-flight photography effectively showcases the white belly and underwing patches. Winter flocks provide opportunities for behavioral photography, and patient observers may capture the male's courtship display with its characteristic tail curl. Early morning and late evening feeding sessions offer good lighting conditions and active subjects.
