Identification

The grey-headed swamphen is a large wetland bird measuring 43 cm in length, making it a striking and relatively easy-to-spot inhabitant of marshes and wetlands. Its most distinctive features are its pale grey head, stout red bill, and greyish-blue to greyish-purple plumage on the body. The wings display a greenish hue, while the legs are bright red, providing useful colour cues for field identification. These features combine to create a handsome, imposing bird that stands out in its wetland habitat.

Range & Habitat

The grey-headed swamphen occurs across a broad geographic range spanning from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent through to southern China and northern Thailand. Three subspecies are recognised, with the nominate subspecies distributed from India, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Sri Lanka extending to southern China and northern Thailand. A second subspecies ranges from Iraq and southern Iran through Pakistan, Afghanistan, and northwestern India. The third subspecies is found in the Caspian Sea region, northwestern Iran, and Turkey. The species favours marshes and jheels (shallow lakes or wetlands) as its preferred habitat.

Behaviour & Diet

Male grey-headed swamphens engage in an elaborate and entertaining courtship display that offers memorable viewing opportunities for birdwatchers. During this display, the male picks up water weeds in his bill and performs bowing movements toward the female, all while producing loud chuckling sounds. This animated behaviour makes the species particularly rewarding to observe during breeding season, as the males' vocal and physical displays are quite conspicuous and energetic.

Best Time & Places to See It

To observe grey-headed swamphens during their most active and vocal period, visit during the breeding season when males are most engaged in their courtship displays. The species occurs naturally throughout its wide range in suitable marsh and jheel habitats across the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. Interestingly, an introduced population has become established in Florida, United States, where the birds can now be found in central and southern regions of the state. This introduced population was added to the American Birding Association checklist in February 2013, making Florida an unexpected location for encountering this Asian species.

Photography Tips

The grey-headed swamphen's bold coloration—particularly the pale grey head, red bill, and bright red legs—photographs well in good light. The bird's relatively large size and habit of frequenting marshes and open water areas make it more accessible to photograph than many rail family members. For the most dynamic images, focus on capturing the male's courtship display during breeding season, when their animated bowing and bill-waving behaviour against aquatic vegetation creates compelling compositions. Position yourself near reed beds and marsh edges where these birds forage and display, and be prepared for the loud chuckling calls that often precede visual sightings.
