Caohai National Nature Reserve

At roughly 1,900 metres elevation on Guizhou's high plateau, Caohai sprawls across a temperate landscape shaped by pronounced seasonal extremes. Winters here are dry and cool, with little precipitation; summers bring moisture but never the steaming intensity of lowland tropics. The reserve's mosaic of alpine grassland, scrub woodland, and shallow wetland reflects this Cwb climate pattern—a landscape where water availability swings dramatically between seasons. Where wetlands persist through the year, emergent vegetation and shallow-water habitats support populations of waders, waterfowl, and small water birds adapted to cool-climate lakes. The grasslands and low scrub harbour ground-nesting species, small mammals, and the insects and seed sources that sustain them. Winter dryness means the reserve's character shifts sharply: some water bodies recede, vegetation browns, and the ecology becomes leaner and more dispersed—yet this very seasonality concentrates wildlife around remaining water and green refugia, making the reserve ecologically dynamic rather than static.
