Identification

The Oriental turtle dove is a medium-sized pigeon slightly larger than the European turtle dove, comparable in size to the collared dove. It shares the distinctive black and white striped patch on the side of its neck made of silver-tipped feathers characteristic of turtle doves. However, it differs from its European relative in several key ways: the breast is less pink, and the orange-brown wing feathers are replaced with a browner hue featuring darker centres that create a scaly appearance. The tail is wedge-shaped. Unlike the European turtle dove, the Oriental turtle dove lacks a bare patch of skin around the eyes. Its flight is notably more relaxed and direct than that of related species. Six subspecies show geographical variation in plumage, with tail patterns differing between migratory populations—some show grey tail tips while others display white, and black markings on outer tail feathers vary in extent.

Range & Habitat

This dove has a wide native distribution across Central Asia extending eastward to Japan, with populations showing distinct migratory patterns based on latitude. The northernmost subspecies migrate south in winter, while tropical populations are sedentary. The westernmost race breeds in the Western Palearctic region, and most birds winter in India, the Maldives, and southern Japan, dispersing to islands including the Lakshadweep. Vagrants occasionally reach western Alaska, British Columbia, and northern and western Europe.

The Oriental turtle dove breeds in well-wooded but open habitats, shifting to more open habitats with good tree cover during winter. The species is found across diverse regions from the Himalayas and Central Asian woodlands to the island populations of the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, with populations also established in peninsular India and Southeast Asia.

Behaviour & Diet

The Oriental turtle dove is predominantly granivorous, foraging on the ground for seeds of hemp, sunflower, wheat, millet, and amaranth, and also consuming gastropods. Its calls differ markedly from the purring sound of the European turtle dove, consisting of a distinctive four-syllable "her-her-oo-oo" with significant variation between populations.

During breeding season, males perform an impressive display involving noisy wing-flapping before shooting upward and gliding down with an outspread tail. Pairs construct substantial nests at mid-canopy height in trees within two days, with males gathering material and females placing it. Two white eggs are laid in each clutch, incubating for 15 to 16 days with chicks fledging in approximately 15 to 17 days. Males incubate during the day while females take the night shift. Both parents feed altricial chicks with crop milk, and multiple broods may be raised seasonally, with the breeding season protracted in temperate zones but occurring in winter in southern India.

Best Time & Places to See It

Northern migratory populations can be observed in their breeding grounds during summer months in Central Asia and central Siberia. Winter offers the best opportunity to see these birds in their wintering grounds across India and Southeast Asia. Vagrants occasionally appear in western North America and Europe, creating excitement among birdwatchers, particularly in Britain where sightings attract considerable attention.

Photography Tips

Photograph this dove in open, well-wooded habitats where it forages on the ground. The distinctive black and white striped neck patch is a key identifying feature worth capturing in detail. Look for birds perched at mid-canopy height in trees where they nest, and frame shots to show the scaly appearance of the wing feathers created by darker centres. The wedge-shaped tail is also a diagnostic feature. Early morning and late afternoon light will best showcase the subtle plumage differences from related species, particularly the browner wing tones and lack of the bare eye patch seen in European turtle doves.
