Identification

The cinereous tit is a distinctive member of the tit family, characterized by its grey back, black hood, and white cheek patch—features that set it apart from its close relatives. A prominent white wing-bar and a broad black ventral stripe running along white underparts are key field marks. The tail is black with white tips on all but the central pair of feathers, and the outermost tail feathers are predominantly white with a black shaft. Females are slightly duller than males, with a narrower ventral line. Young birds show some green on the back and yellowish on the underside, which can cause confusion with other species.

The cinereous tit belongs to a confusing group of Asian tit species, but once you learn its combination of grey back and white cheek patch, it becomes recognizable. Geographic variation exists across its wide range, with subspecies differing mainly in the shade of grey, the extent of white on tail feathers, and overall size.

Range & Habitat

This species has an extensive distribution stretching from West Asia across South Asia and into Southeast Asia. Its range encompasses parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan in the west, extends through India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, and continues through Thailand and Indochina into China, including Hainan. Populations also occur across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, and throughout Japan and the Ryukyu Islands.

With twenty recognized subspecies spread across this vast geographic range, the cinereous tit occupies diverse woodland and forest habitats throughout its territory. The Japanese tit, formerly considered a separate species, is now recognized as part of the cinereous tit complex based on molecular studies.

Behaviour & Diet

Cinereous tits are social birds usually encountered in pairs or small groups, and they frequently join mixed-species foraging flocks. They forage primarily by gleaning, plucking insects—mainly caterpillars, bugs, and beetles—from vegetation. These acrobatic foragers sometimes use their feet to hold insects while tearing them apart with their beaks. They also supplement their diet with buds and fruits, and some subspecies have been observed wedging hard seeds into bark crevices before hammering them open.

The breeding season falls in summer, though timing varies across their range; in southern India and Sri Lanka, birds breed from February to May, with some nesting also recorded September to November. They typically lay four to six eggs in tree cavities, wall hollows, or mud banks with narrow entrance holes, lining nests with moss, hair, and feathers. Both parents incubate the eggs and may raise multiple broods. These birds produce distinctive whistling calls described as "titiweesi...titiweesi... witsi-seesee," repeated three or four times, particularly during breeding season.

The best time to observe cinereous tits is during the breeding season when they are more vocal and active, making them easier to locate. Since breeding timing varies geographically—February to May in southern India and Sri Lanka, for instance—consult local birding resources for your specific destination. These birds are generally year-round residents throughout their range, so they can be found in any season, though they may be less conspicuous outside breeding periods.

Look for cinereous tits in woodlands and mixed-species foraging flocks, where they often participate alongside other small birds. Patient observation, particularly in early morning hours when they are most active, increases your chances of sightings.
