Identification

The Citrine Wagtail is a slender songbird measuring 15.5–17 cm in length, immediately recognizable by the long tail that it constantly wags—a defining characteristic of the genus Motacilla. The species takes its name from its distinctive yellowish coloration, which is particularly striking in breeding males.

Adult males in breeding plumage display a striking contrast: grey or black upperparts with white on the remiges (flight feathers), bright yellow underparts, and a bright yellow head interrupted only by a black nape. In winter, males become duller, with their yellow underparts diluted by white and a brownish head marked by a yellowish supercilium (eyebrow stripe). Females resemble males in winter plumage but appear as washed-out versions, making them more subtle and challenging to identify in the field.

Range & Habitat

The Citrine Wagtail breeds across the central Palearctic region, favoring wet meadows and tundra environments where water and open ground provide ideal conditions for foraging and nesting. Following breeding season, the species undertakes a substantial migration to South Asia for winter, often settling in highland areas. This migration pattern reflects the bird's adaptation to seasonal changes across vast geographic distances.

Notably, the species' range is expanding westwards, with increasing numbers recorded as rare vagrants in western Europe. However, these westward vagrants appear to extend their migration routes rather than stray during passage, suggesting a shift in traditional migration patterns rather than birds becoming lost.

Behaviour & Diet

The Citrine Wagtail is an insectivorous specialist, hunting small invertebrates in the open country near water where it makes its home. Its preference for wet meadows, bogs, and similar wetland habitats reflects its feeding ecology and dependence on abundant insect populations in these productive environments.

The species nests on the ground, laying clutches of 4–5 eggs that are characteristically speckled. Like other wagtails, this bird is active and mobile, with its constantly wagging tail serving both as a behavioral characteristic and, possibly, as a means of flushing insects from vegetation as it forages.

Best Time & Places to See It

Citrine Wagtails are best observed during breeding season in their Palearctic range, particularly in wet meadows and tundra habitats where the birds are most numerous and active. Winter visitors to South Asia, particularly highland areas, offer another opportunity for observation, though the birds may be more dispersed during this season.

For European birdwatchers, the species remains a rare but increasingly expected vagrant, particularly as westward range expansion continues. Observers in western Europe should remain alert during migration periods, when vagrants are most likely to appear.

Photography Tips

Photographing breeding males during spring and early summer offers the best opportunity to capture the bird's brilliant yellow plumage and striking head pattern against grey or black upperparts. The species' preference for open wetland habitats means relatively unobstructed sight lines, though the bird's active, constantly moving behavior demands fast shutter speeds and tracking skills.

Winter plumage and female birds present a greater challenge due to their subdued coloration and brownish tones. The constantly wagging tail provides a distinctive behavioral feature that can help identify the species in photographs, even when plumage colors are muted. Early morning light in wetland habitats will best reveal the subtle yellow tones characteristic of this species.
