Daurian Redstart

Identification

The Daurian redstart is a small passerine measuring 14 to 15 cm in length and weighing 11 to 20 g. Like all typical redstarts, this species exhibits marked sexual dimorphism. Breeding males are particularly striking, with a grey crown and nape, a lighter forehead and crown-sides, and a distinctive black face and chin. Their mantle and wings are brownish, while a large white wing patch is prominently displayed. The chest, lower back, and rump are bright orange, contrasting sharply with the black tail that has orange sides. Juvenile males follow a similar colour pattern but are considerably duller and less clearly marked. Females present a warmer brown plumage above with paler underparts, an orange rump, and tail sides matching the males' orange markings, alongside a similarly large white wing patch. Both sexes share black bills, eyes, legs, and feet.

Range & Habitat

This species is found across temperate Asia, with its range encompassing Manchuria, southeastern Russia, northeastern Mongolia, central China, and Korea. The Daurian redstart is migratory, with populations following distinct wintering routes: the eastern subspecies (P. a. auroreus) winters in Korea, Japan, southeast coastal China, and Taiwan, while the western subspecies (P. a. leucopterus) winters in northeast India and parts of Southeast Asia. Daurian redstarts favour open forests and forest edges, but they are equally at home in agricultural margins, parks, and urban gardens, making them adaptable inhabitants of both rural and developed landscapes.

Behaviour & Diet

These birds are reasonably confiding and often allow humans to approach quite closely before retreating, making them relatively approachable for observation. They breed during the summer months, with breeding pairs documented as early as May. An intriguing aspect of their mating behaviour is a preference for partners with similar wing patch sizes, though interestingly, this assortative mating does not appear to influence reproductive success. The species is widespread and rather common throughout its range, and it is not considered threatened by the IUCN.

Summer months offer the best opportunities to observe breeding birds across their breeding range in Manchuria, southeastern Russia, northeastern Mongolia, central China, and Korea. For winter birdwatching, travellers should visit Korea, Japan, southeast coastal China, Taiwan, northeast India, or Southeast Asia, depending on which subspecies they wish to encounter. Urban gardens and parks provide accessible viewing opportunities alongside more natural forest edges and agricultural margins.
