The hair-crested drongo is a striking Asian member of the Dicruridae family. This species was historically confused with the spangled drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus), which is native to Australia's east coast, but the two are now recognized as distinct species. The hair-crested drongo's characteristic feature is suggested by its common name, though field identification among the various subspecies can be challenging due to subtle plumage variations across its wide range.
Range & Habitat
The hair-crested drongo is native across a vast Asian distribution stretching from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan through Indochina to China, Indonesia, and Brunei. Twelve subspecies are currently recognized, occupying different regions from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asian mainland territories and the Indonesian archipelago. Some authorities consider the Sumatran drongo to be a subspecies of this bird, indicating the complexity and variation within the group.
Behaviour & Diet
Hair-crested drongos are highly social and vocal birds, typically moving through their habitat in small flocks. They are very noisy birds, maintaining constant communication with their flock members through a repertoire of calls. This vociferous nature is a distinctive feature of the species, making them conspicuous despite their forest habitats. Like other drongos, they are aerial insectivores, though specific dietary details are not extensively documented in available sources.

The widespread distribution of the hair-crested drongo across multiple countries and subspecies means that sighting opportunities vary considerably depending on location. Birds can be encountered throughout their range from the Indian subcontinent through Indochina to Indonesia. The species' habit of moving in noisy flocks makes detection relatively straightforward for patient observers—listening for their distinctive chattering calls is often the best way to locate them.
