Indochinese Roller

Identification

The Indochinese roller is a stocky, colourful bird with distinctive plumage that makes it unmistakable in the field. Its crown and vent are bright blue, while the primaries display deep purplish-blue feathers with a striking pale blue band. The tail is sky blue with a terminal band of Prussian blue, though the central tail feathers are duller green. The neck and throat are purplish-lilac with white shaft streaks, contrasting with a purplish-brown, unstreaked face and breast. The bare patch around the eye is ochre in colour, and the underwing coverts are a deep shade of blue—a feature that becomes particularly visible in flight. Like all rollers, it possesses a long, compressed bill with a curved upper edge and hooked tip, along with characteristic long rictal bristles at the base of the bill.
