Lincoln’s Sparrow

Identification

Lincoln's sparrow is a small, trim sparrow measuring 5.1–5.9 inches in length with a wingspan of 7.5–8.7 inches. Adults display dark-streaked olive-brown upperparts contrasted with a distinctive light brown breast marked by fine streaks, a white belly, and white throat. The head features a brown cap with a grey central stripe, grey face, brown cheeks, a buffy mustache stripe, and a brown line through the eye with a narrow eye ring. The wings are olive-brown and the tail narrow. Males and females are identical in plumage. Though superficially similar to the song sparrow, Lincoln's sparrow is noticeably smaller and trimmer with finer breast streaks. Juveniles resemble juvenile swamp sparrows but rarely display the unicolored crown characteristic of that species.

Range & Habitat

Lincoln's sparrow breeds in subalpine and montane zones across Canada, Alaska, and the northeastern and western United States, becoming less common toward the eastern portions of this range. During breeding season, the species favors wet thickets, shrubby bogs, and moss-dominated habitats with dense shrub cover, nesting in well-concealed shallow cups on the ground beneath vegetation. At lower elevations, they inhabit mixed deciduous groves, mixed shrub-willows, and black spruce-tamarack bogs. Their wintering range extends from the southern United States through Mexico to northern Central America, with recent vagrant records from montane regions of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

During migration, Lincoln's sparrows use thickets and bushes in riparian zones, lowlands including the Great Plains and Great Basin, and urban and suburban habitats. Migration occurs between mid-May and late September. Winter habitats include tropical evergreen and deciduous forests, pine-oak forests, Pacific swamp forests, and arid subtropical scrub.

Behaviour & Diet

Lincoln's sparrow is an extremely secretive bird, often remaining hidden even in areas where it is common. Only males sing, producing a unique sweet, wrenlike, gurgling song with varied frequencies—typically starting with several high-pitched introductory notes before transitioning into a trill that rises abruptly then drops. Males average 3.7 different song types each. They sing most frequently in early morning and primarily during the breeding season before incubation, often from exposed perches or during flight. The species employs multiple vocalizations: an aggressive, flat "tup" or "chip" call used on exposed perches, a soft high-pitched buzzy "zeet" call used under cover, and a distinct hoarse "zrrr-zrrr-zrrr" sequence used for mating and territorial disputes.

During winter, Lincoln's sparrows feed predominantly on small seeds from weeds and grasses. In the breeding season, their diet shifts to arthropods including insect larvae, ants, spiders, beetles, flies, moths, and caterpillars. They forage primarily on the ground and at the base of willows, using taller trees and willow branches as singing posts.

Lincoln's sparrow is best located during the breeding season in montane and subalpine habitats across the western mountains and boreal regions. The species is most active in early morning when males sing from exposed perches. However, their secretive nature and preference for densely-vegetated habitats make them challenging to observe. Search wet thickets, shrubby bogs, and areas with dense willow growth, particularly near water. Migration periods from mid-May through September offer opportunities to encounter the species in riparian zones and brushy habitats across lowland regions.

Photographing Lincoln's sparrow requires patience and careful approach due to its skulking behavior. Position yourself near singing perches during early morning in breeding habitat, particularly at the edges of wet thickets and around willows. Use longer focal lengths to avoid disturbing the bird, as it tends to retreat into dense cover when alarmed. The bird's fine breast streaking and facial pattern details are best captured in soft, diffused light. Listen for the distinctive wrenlike song to locate singing males, which are more likely to remain visible than females or non-breeding birds.
