Little Tern

Identification

The little tern is a diminutive seabird, measuring just 21–25 cm long with a wingspan of 41–47 cm, making it unmistakable among terns for its small size. In breeding plumage, it displays a distinctive white forehead contrasting with darker upperparts, a thin sharp bill that is yellow with a black tip, and yellow legs. The white forehead and overall proportions distinguish it from most other terns, though it can be confused with the fairy tern and Saunders's tern.

Winter plumage brings noticeable changes: the forehead becomes more extensively white, the bill turns entirely black, and the legs become duller in colour. These seasonal variations are important field marks for observers tracking populations across the year.

Range & Habitat

The little tern is widely distributed across the Old World, breeding on the coasts and inland waterways of temperate and tropical Europe, Asia, north and west Africa, and eastern Australia. Migratory populations winter in subtropical and tropical oceans as far south as South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, while some Asian populations are largely resident year-round.

The species breeds in colonies on gravel or shingle coasts and islands, and historically occupied larger river systems across Europe. Today, suitable inland breeding habitats are confined to scattered river systems including the Loire/Allier in France, the Vistula/Odra in Poland, the Po/Ticino in Italy, and several Balkan rivers. For feeding, it frequents both coastal saline environments and larger river systems, where it hunts in open water.

Behaviour & Diet

The little tern is a specialist plunge-diver, hunting small fish by diving from the air into water in both coastal and inland habitats. It breeds in defensive colonies, typically laying two to four eggs directly on the ground in minimal nest structures. Both sexes are notably aggressive defenders of their nest and young, attacking intruders with vigour—a behaviour characteristic of white terns.

The species exhibits interesting courtship behaviour, with males presenting caught fish to females as part of their display. Its loud, distinctive creaking call is a characteristic sound of tern colonies, making it identifiable by ear even when individuals are difficult to see.

Best Time & Places to See It

Little terns are best observed during the breeding season at established colonies on coastal shingles and gravel islands, or along river systems where populations persist. European river populations are most reliably found on the Loire/Allier in France, the Vistula/Odra in Poland, the Po/Ticino in Italy, and the Drava in Hungary and Croatia, though populations are considerably reduced from historical levels. The Drava population, with only around 15 breeding pairs, represents one of Europe's most threatened populations.

Migratory populations can be encountered in winter across subtropical and tropical oceans, particularly in African and Asian waters. The breeding season offers the best opportunity to observe these birds, when they are concentrated in colonies and actively hunting to provision their young.

Photography Tips

The little tern's small size and fast, erratic flight make it a challenging subject. Position yourself near breeding colonies during daylight hours when birds are most active in hunting and courtship displays. The bright yellow bill and legs visible in breeding plumage provide good colour contrast for photography, while the white forehead is an important identifying feature to capture clearly.

Plunge-diving sequences offer dramatic photographic opportunities; anticipate dives by watching for hovering birds and use fast shutter speeds to freeze the action. Early morning light often produces the best results on coastal or river breeding sites. Exercise caution and maintain distance from colonies to avoid disturbing nesting birds, particularly given the species' aggressive nest defence and threatened status in many regions.
