Marabou Stork

Identification

The marabou stork is unmistakable due to its massive size and distinctive appearance. Large specimens reach up to 152 centimetres (5 feet) in height and typically weigh between 4.5–8 kg (10–17.5 lb), with females smaller than males. The bird is instantly recognizable by its black back and white underparts, bare head and neck, huge bill, prominent pink gular sac at the throat, neck ruff, and long white legs with black wings. Unlike most storks, marabous fly with their necks retracted like herons rather than extended. Young birds are browner with smaller bills and do not reach full maturity for up to four years. The species' common name "undertaker bird" derives from its silhouette: when viewed from behind, the cloak-like wings, back, and skinny white legs create an uncanny resemblance to a figure in formal mourning attire.

Range & Habitat

The marabou stork is native to sub-Saharan Africa, where it breeds in both wet and arid habitats. Notably, it thrives near human habitation and is particularly abundant around landfill sites and urban areas. In East Africa, birds interact closely with humans and breed in urban centres, while in southern African countries they breed mainly in less populated areas. This adaptability to human-modified landscapes distinguishes the marabou from many other large African birds and has allowed populations to remain robust despite habitat changes across the continent.

Behaviour & Diet

Like other storks, marabous are gregarious and colonial breeders. They breed during the African dry season when food becomes more readily available as water sources shrink. Females lay two or three eggs in stick nests, with eggs hatching after a 30-day incubation period. Young birds reach sexual maturity at four years old. The species is known to be quite ill-tempered and, though not very vocal, engages in bill-rattling courtship displays and uses its throat sac to produce various sounds during breeding.

Marabous are frequent scavengers, and their bare head and long neck are anatomical adaptations to this lifestyle—a feathered head would become caked with blood and debris when feeding inside large carcasses. They eat mainly carrion, scraps, and faeces but will opportunistically consume almost any animal matter they can swallow, including fish, frogs, insects, eggs, small mammals, and reptiles. During breeding season, adults shift toward small live prey to feed their nestlings. Increasingly, marabous have become dependent on human garbage, with hundreds congregating around African dumps and urban areas, sometimes devouring surprising items such as shoes and metal pieces.

Marabous are easiest to locate during the African dry season when they breed in colonies and congregate around shrinking water sources. Urban areas and landfill sites across sub-Saharan Africa offer reliable viewing opportunities, particularly in East African cities where the birds have adapted to human settlements. The species' gregarious nature means that once you locate one individual, others are usually nearby, increasing your chances of successful observation and photography.

Photography Tips

The marabou's massive size and striking silhouette make it a compelling photographic subject. Its impressive wingspan—typically 225–287 cm (7–9 ft) across the wings—is best captured during takeoff or landing sequences. Photograph birds in early morning or late afternoon light to accentuate the contrast between their black wings and white underparts. The distinctive bare head, pink throat sac, and neck ruff are key identifying features worth isolating in close-up portraits. When photographing marabous at landfill sites or urban feeding areas, be prepared for dynamic behaviour and competitive interactions between individuals, which can yield dramatic action shots.
