Plain Parakeet

Identification

The plain parakeet is a small parrot measuring 23 to 25 cm in length and weighing approximately 63 grams. Adults are predominantly green overall, with a distinctive bluish tinge on the nape and yellowish undersides. The shoulder displays bronzy or brownish-green plumage, while flight feathers and the underside of the tail are bluish-green. The bill is pinkish with a paler base. Immature birds resemble adults but show less blue in the wings and shorter tails. Notably, populations in São Paulo state frequently exhibit individuals with blue mutations, creating striking color variations within flocks.

Range & Habitat

Endemic to eastern Brazil, the plain parakeet is found from Alagoas south to Santa Catarina, with an isolated population in Rio Grande do Sul. It inhabits the Atlantic Forest biome, thriving in secondary forest, cultivated areas with tree groves, plantations, and urban parks. The species has adapted remarkably well to human-modified landscapes and is common in major cities including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. At higher elevations inland, it frequents the edges and canopy of montane rainforest, typically occurring in lowlands but ranging up to 1,200 meters elevation.

Behaviour & Diet

The plain parakeet is highly vocal, producing characteristic high-pitched shrill calls described as "cree" or the bisyllabic "cra-creep," alongside lower-pitched harsh "cra-cra-cra" vocalizations delivered both from perches and in flight. Flocking birds often call simultaneously, creating a distinctive soundscape. These parakeets feed primarily on seeds, fruit, flowers, and nectar from a wide variety of plants and trees, supplementing their diet with adult and larval insects. They make some local seasonal movements, though these patterns remain incompletely understood. Breeding occurs from September to December in tree cavities, with clutches of four eggs and fledging at seven weeks.
