Sandwich Tern

Identification

The Sandwich tern is a medium-large tern, 36–41 cm long with a wingspan of 95–105 cm, making it a conspicuous and relatively unmistakable species across most of its range. Its most distinctive features are a pale silvery-grey back and wings contrasting sharply with white underparts, creating a very pale appearance in flight. The diagnostic thin, sharp bill is black with a striking yellow tip, and the bird sports short black legs. A shaggy black crest adorns the crown during the breeding season, but this becomes less extensive in winter, when the forehead turns extensively white before being regained in the spring moult. The primary flight feathers darken during summer and develop a characteristic "hook tip" in late summer as the white margin wears away. Young birds are duller, bearing grey and blackish scalloped plumage on their backs and wings, with an all-blackish bill lacking the yellow tip.

The Sandwich tern is highly vocal, producing a characteristic loud, grating call described as "kear-ik" or "kerr ink." Several congeners share similar bill coloration—notably Cabot's tern—but careful attention to structural details and moult timing will distinguish them. The Chinese crested tern, with its reversed bill colouration (yellow with black tip), overlaps minimally in range, while the elegant and lesser crested terns possess all-orange bills.

Range & Habitat

The Sandwich tern breeds throughout the Palearctic region from Europe to the Caspian Sea, undertaking impressive long-distance migrations to winter grounds. Populations breeding in Great Britain migrate to the west coast of Africa from Senegal south to South Africa—a journey exceeding 10,000 km—while those from the Caspian Sea coasts migrate to the Indian Subcontinent, reaching south to Sri Lanka. Birds also winter in the Mediterranean basin. With a global range estimated between 100,000 and 1,000,000 km², and an estimated population of 460,000–500,000 individuals, this species maintains a robust presence across multiple continents.

This species breeds in very dense colonies on coasts and islands, where nests may be positioned only 20–30 cm apart. Exceptionally, it nests inland on suitable large freshwater lakes close to the coast. The Sandwich tern relies on the sheer density of its colonies and proximity to more aggressive species such as Arctic terns and black-headed gulls for protection against predation, rather than defending aggressively itself.

Behaviour & Diet

The Sandwich tern is a specialized fish-eater that feeds almost invariably in marine environments through dramatic plunge-dives. Unlike the Arctic tern, it typically dives directly rather than from the characteristic "stepped-hover," striking the water surface with considerable force to capture prey. The male presents fish to the female as part of the courtship display, a behaviour characteristic of the genus Thalasseus.

The species nests in ground scrapes, laying one to three eggs (most commonly one or two). As a long-distance migrant, different breeding populations follow distinct migration routes tied to their specific wintering grounds, demonstrating remarkable navigational fidelity across generations.

Best Time & Places to See It

Sandwich terns are most reliably encountered during the breeding season at their dense coastal and island colonies, where their loud, distinctive calls betray their presence even from a distance. The sheer concentration of birds and their active plunge-diving behaviour make breeding colonies excellent for observation. Spring and early summer offer peak activity as courtship displays and fish-offerings occur. Timing varies by region; northern European populations breed earlier than southern ones, allowing birders to encounter breeding birds from April through early summer by moving geographically.

Winter sightings depend heavily on location. Observers in western Africa or the Indian Subcontinent may encounter wintering migrants, though these birds are generally more dispersed and harder to find than at breeding colonies. Coastal waters and bays provide the best habitat for locating feeding birds during migration periods.

Photography Tips

The Sandwich tern's pale plumage and dynamic plunge-diving behaviour offer excellent photographic opportunities. During breeding season at colonies, use a longer lens (400mm or greater) to avoid disturbing nesting birds while capturing the characteristic shaggy crest and pale colouration. The contrast between the dark bill with its yellow tip and white plumage provides striking compositional elements.

Action shots of plunge-dives are achievable with fast shutter speeds (1/2000s or faster) and continuous focus tracking. Photograph during overcast conditions to avoid harsh shadows on the pale underparts. The seasonal change in head pattern—black cap to white-crowned—offers variation for sequential visits. Early morning light is particularly flattering, enhancing the delicate pale grey tones of the upperparts and highlighting the characteristic yellow bill-tip against the black bill.
