It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela; also extreme eastern Panama in Central America. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and heavily degraded former forest. == Etymology == The genus name Hemithraupis combines the Ancient Greek word hēmi, meaning "half" or "small" with the Ancient Greek word thraupis, which refers to an unidentified small bird mentioned by Aristotle. In ornithology, it is typically used to refer to tanagers. Flavicollis is derived from Latin, meaning "yellow-backed". == Taxonomy == The yellow-backed tanager was described in 1818 by Louis Pierre Vieillot, who placed it in the genus Nemosia. It was later placed in its current genus, Hemithraupis. There are currently 11 recognized subspecies.
