Es nativo de América del Norte y América Central, incluyendo Alaska, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y Panamá. Su hábitat natural son los ríos, riachuelos, cataratas, lagos y lagunas de montaña.
