Es propia de Eurasia y África. Es un ave de plumaje críptico y hábitos discretos que suele vivir escondida en los herbazales húmedos. Cría en Eurasia y migra a África suroriental para pasar el invierno, con frecuencia asociado en bandadas con la codorniz, hecho al que debe su nombre común en español.
