Se considera una ave migratoria. Su tamaño es nediano de entre 24cm y 25 cm de envergadura.
Cuenta con patas largas y alas quebradas que le hacen desplazarse de manera sobresaliente a otras aves.
Su ciclo reproductivo depende del sitio donde se encuentren las aves ya que su distribución va desde el norte en Canadá hasta al sur del continente en Perú y Chile. La anidación al norte y centro de Canadá se da al inicio de la primera en los meses de marzo y abril. Durante mayo en el norte de Estados Unidos y el sur de Canadá. Por otro lado, debajo del Ecuador en países como Chile y Perú las aves anidan en enero y junio. La incubación por ambos padres tarda de 24 a 28 días y las nidadas comprenden de cuatro a cinco huevos.
