Es la única especie del género Sittasomus, pero algunos autores sostienen que la presente se divide en más de una especie. Es nativa de la América tropical (Neotrópico), donde se distribuye desde México, por América Central y del Sur, hasta el norte de Argentina y norte de Uruguay.
