Su distribución geográfica abarca Brasil, este de Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, el norte y centro de Argentina.
Félix de Azara comenta que el nombre de "picazuró" era el que le daban los aborígenes guaraníes y significa "paloma amarga".
