Es un ave parcialmente migratoria, poblaciones anidan en la costa este de Estados Unidos y migran hacia el sur, mientras que otras son residentes permanentes en el sur de América del Norte, América Central, Antillas y América del Sur, llegando hasta Uruguay y el centro de Argentina.
