Es considerada una subespecie del cernícalo vulgar (Falco tinnunculus) por algunas autoridades, sin embargo, basándose en estudios de ADN realizados en 2002 y apoyado por marcadas diferencias en el plumaje, varios autores la consideran una especie separada.
