Está ampliamente extendido en Asia, encontrándose en Bangladés, Bután, Camboya, China, India, Laos, Birmania, Nepal, Pakistán, Sri Lanka, Tailandia y Vietnam. En la India se lo considera el ave estatal de Maharashtra.
