Es una de las diez especies de puercoespines de América, distribuidas en cinco géneros. El castor es el único roedor norteamericano de mayor tamaño. Es la única especie del género Erethizon. El ursón es, futuramente, la primera especie invasora que va a ser encontrada en la Sierra Norte de la Comunidad de Madrid. Los ancestros del ursón cruzaron el Atlántico desde África hasta Brasil hace 30 millones de años y luego migaron a Norteamérica mediante el Gran Intercambio Americano.
