Bobcat

Identification

The bobcat is one of four species in the medium-sized wild cat genus Lynx and is the smallest of these four species. It reaches a total length of up to 125 cm (50 inches) including its distinctive black-tipped, stubby "bobbed" tail, from which it derives its name. The bobcat has a variable coat that is generally tan to grayish-brown, with black streaks on the body and dark bars on the forelegs. Its spotted patterning provides effective camouflage, and bobcats in desert regions of the southwest have the lightest-colored coats, while those in northern forested regions are darkest.

Key identifying features include black-tipped, pointed ears with short black tufts, a wide face created by ruffs of extended hair beneath the ears, and yellow eyes with black slit pupils. The nose is pinkish-red. An off-white color is visible on the lips, chin, and underparts. The bobcat has sharp hearing and vision and a good sense of smell, making it an excellent hunter and climber that swims when necessary.

Range & Habitat

Native to North America, the bobcat ranges from southern Canada through most of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca in Mexico. Two subspecies are recognized: one east of the Great Plains and one west of the Great Plains. Although it remains in some of its original range, populations are vulnerable to extirpation by coyotes and domestic animals in certain areas.

The bobcat is an adaptable predator that inhabits wooded areas, semidesert, urban edge, forest edge, and swampland environments. This habitat flexibility has contributed to its listing as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 2002, due to its wide distribution and large population, despite extensive historical hunting for sport and fur.

Behaviour & Diet

Like most cats, the bobcat is territorial and largely solitary, though some overlap in home ranges does occur. It marks territorial boundaries using several methods, including claw marks and deposits of urine or feces. The bobcat is primarily nocturnal, with pupils that widen during night activity to maximize light reception.

Though the bobcat prefers rabbits and hares, its diet is adaptable and includes insects, chickens, geese and other birds, small rodents, and deer. Prey selection depends on location and habitat, season, and abundance. The bobcat breeds from winter into spring and has a gestation period of about two months.

Bobcats are found across their range from southern Canada to Oaxaca, Mexico, across most of the contiguous United States. Their adaptability to varied habitats—from forests to semidesert to urban edges—means they can be encountered in diverse environments throughout their range. However, as largely solitary, territorial animals, they are not always easy to spot, and sightings depend on patience, timing, and local knowledge of habitat preferences.

Photography Tips

The bobcat's distinctive features—its black-barred forelegs, bobbed tail, tufted ears, and spotted coat pattern—make it an appealing photographic subject. Early morning and dusk are the best times to search for bobcats, as they are primarily nocturnal. When photographing, focus on capturing the characteristic facial markings, the wide face with ear tufts, and the distinctive bars on the legs and tail. The variable coat color across geographic regions also offers interesting compositional opportunities, particularly contrasting the lighter desert populations with darker northern specimens.
