Soprano Pipistrelle

Identification

The soprano pipistrelle is a small bat species that was not formally recognized as distinct from the common pipistrelle until 1999. The two species are best distinguished by their echolocation calls: the soprano pipistrelle uses frequencies between 53 and 86 kHz with most energy concentrated at 55 kHz, compared to the common pipistrelle's 45 kHz call. This acoustic difference is so characteristic that the soprano pipistrelle is also known as the 55 kHz pipistrelle. Since their taxonomic split, researchers have discovered additional differences in appearance, habitat preferences, and diet between the two species. The soprano pipistrelle is also called the brown pipistrelle.

Range & Habitat

The soprano pipistrelle is found throughout Europe, where it commonly roosts on buildings, particularly on rooftops and in houses such as bungalows and manors. Research suggests that bats prefer rooftops because of the thermal variations available across a roof structure—these temperature gradients allow maternity colonies to access cooler spots during warm weather and warmer spots at other times. Although soprano pipistrelles can thermoregulate at temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, they typically prefer not to exceed this temperature.

Individual soprano pipistrelles occupy relatively small home ranges of around 487 hectares, consisting mostly of agricultural land with significant use of woodland edges and grasslands. For foraging, however, they show a strong preference for riparian woodland habitats, which account for the majority of their hunting time alongside water habitats. Hunting areas may extend 4–10 km from the roost.

Behaviour & Diet

Soprano pipistrelles are flexible in their roosting habits, often using multiple alternative roosting sites within their range. Some individuals in a colony may exclusively use alternative sites, and when excluded from their original roosts, bats have been observed establishing new colonies at preferred alternative locations rather than returning to their original site. This behavior may relate to their use of torpor and their preference for maintaining temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, particularly during maternity periods.

These bats forage in a small portion of their home range, typically close to their day roost. During breeding and lactation, they undertake longer foraging flights but with fewer bouts than the common pipistrelle. During maternity colony periods, increased wetland habitat within 2 km of the roost appears to be deliberately selected, suggesting these bats maintain a specialized diet closely tied to wetland resources. Maternity colonies can become quite large—significantly larger than common pipistrelle colonies—which can create nuisance issues for humans due to odor.

Best Time & Places to See It

Soprano pipistrelles form maternity colonies during the breeding season, from approximately April through October, when pregnant and nursing females congregate together. Early pregnancy occurs in May, late pregnancy in June and July, and lactation in August. During these periods, bats are most reliably associated with roost sites near wetland habitats. Buildings with suitable roof structures, particularly those surrounded by riparian woodland and wetland areas, offer the best opportunities for observation.

Photography Tips

Photographing soprano pipistrelles requires specialized equipment for capturing fast-moving subjects in low light. High-speed flash photography or infrared camera traps positioned near roosting sites on buildings may yield results. Timing visits for dusk emergence during the warmer months (May through August) increases your chances of encountering foraging bats. Location matters: focus on areas with riparian woodland and wetland habitats within 2 km of buildings used as roosts, as these are the primary foraging zones.
