This is a country of terraced hillsides, deep ravines and cliff faces weathered into ledges and fissures, and its climate — mild, without a pronounced dry season — keeps a steady green thread running through the year, from mossy springs to shaded woodland floors even in high summer. That mix of open ground, scrub and mature trees, stitched together by hedgerows and old stone walls, is what makes the park so ecologically rich: it supports birds of prey that hunt the thermals above the ridges, woodland songbirds and small forest mammals in the canopy and undergrowth, bats roosting in caves and hollow trees, and a wealth of insects and reptiles along the sun-warmed margins where scrub meets meadow.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in that layered habitat and in the quality of the light. Early mornings bring soft mist into the valleys and long shadows across the terraces, while late afternoons turn the limestone gold and throw raptors into sharp silhouette against the sky. Spring and early summer are the richest seasons for nesting activity and flowering scrub; autumn brings quieter trails and low, raking light that reveals the texture of the terrain. Access is largely on foot along waymarked paths and quiet rural lanes, rewarding those who walk slowly and watch the edges — the hedgerows, the cliff ledges, the transition zones where one habitat hands over to the next. Patience and a good lens will do the rest.
