Identification

Montagu's harrier is a deceptively small raptor with a wingspan of 97–115 cm and length of 43–47 cm. Sexual dimorphism is particularly striking in this species. Adult males display pale grey plumage with characteristic black wingtips, distinctive black bands along the secondaries (visible both above and below the wing), and rusty streaks on the belly and flanks. Adult females are broadly similar to pallid and hen harriers, with pale yellow-brown underparts marked by longitudinal belly stripes and spotted wing coverts, dark brown upperparts, and white upper tail coverts. Juveniles resemble females but have uniformly red-brown belly and under-wing coverts rather than spotted markings. A melanistic form occurs regularly, with darker males showing black heads and chocolate-brown females.

In flight, Montagu's harrier is notably graceful and elegant, with powerful wingbeats that create an impression of buoyancy. The species appears larger than its actual body weight due to its large wing surface, and typically holds its wings with a marked positive dihedral in true harrier fashion. It is most easily confused with hen harriers and pallid harriers within its range. Males are distinguished by their distinctly darker, more mottled plumage, while females and juveniles require careful observation. Montagu's harrier appears more slender in flight than the hen harrier, with a longer tail, longer and narrower wings, and more pointed "hands," plus more elastic, almost tern-like wingbeats. The pale neck collar present on female and juvenile pallid harriers is absent in Montagu's.

Range & Habitat

Montagu's harrier breeds in large open areas across the Palearctic in a middle-latitude band of predominantly temperate, Mediterranean, and boreal climates. It is a migratory species, wintering in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Though occasionally found nesting up to 1,500 m, it is essentially a lowland species, nesting mostly in broad river valleys, plains, and areas bordering lakes and the sea.

The species requires large open areas with sufficiently tall ground vegetation for cover without being overgrown. It breeds in wetlands (often smaller and drier than those used by marsh harriers), heaths, dunes, moors, steppes, and shrublands in gorse or heather. Young conifer plantations are also utilized. In western Europe, up to 70 percent of the population breeds in agricultural habitats, particularly grasslands and cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and colza, making birds vulnerable to early harvesting. The species favors posts—fenceposts, small trees, or rocky outcrops—for resting and surveying breeding areas. It avoids densely settled areas and is highly susceptible to disturbance.

Behaviour & Diet

Montagu's harrier hunts by flying low along fixed routes at low heights, searching the countryside in typical harrier fashion. Its diet consists mainly of small rodents, small birds, bird eggs, reptiles (including snakes), and large insects, particularly Orthoptera, which are numerically the most common prey items. The species is adaptable to regional food availability: in northern ranges it primarily takes ground squirrels and rabbits, whereas in southern Europe it mostly takes small reptiles and large insects. In areas where rodents dominate the food supply, breeding success depends greatly on cyclic vole population fluctuations.

Best Time & Places to See It

Montagu's harrier is best observed during the breeding season in open landscapes across the Palearctic, particularly in broad river valleys, agricultural plains, and areas bordering lakes and the sea. The species can be found hunting in any season in areas of low or sparse vegetation where prey is more visible. Winter observations are possible in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula where the species migrates.

Photography Tips

Photographing Montagu's harrier requires patience and positioning in open habitats where the bird hunts low. The species' graceful, buoyant flight with elastic wingbeats offers excellent photographic opportunities, particularly when capturing its characteristic wing posture with marked positive dihedral. Early morning hours often provide the best lighting for low-flying birds in open countryside. Males, with their distinctive pale grey plumage and black wingtips, are more straightforward to photograph and identify than females and juveniles. Avoid approaching nesting birds, as the species is highly susceptible to disturbance and will abandon breeding areas if pressured.
