The Eurasian chaffinch is a small passerine with striking sexual dimorphism. Males are brightly coloured, displaying a distinctive blue-grey cap and rust-red underparts that make them unmistakable in the field. Females are more subdued in their plumage, but both sexes share two contrasting white wing bars and white sides to the tail, which are useful field marks even when viewing less colourful individuals.
Range & Habitat
The chaffinch is a common and widespread species across much of Europe, extending its range across the Palearctic to Siberia. This vast distribution, combined with large population numbers, has secured its status as a species of least concern. The species shows flexibility in its breeding habitat, with females constructing deep cup nests in the forks of trees.
Behaviour & Diet
Male chaffinches are vocal birds with strong voices, singing from exposed perches to attract mates during the breeding season. Their reproductive cycle is efficient: females lay clutches of typically four or five eggs, which hatch in about 13 days, with chicks fledging in around 14 days. Both parents continue feeding the young for several weeks after they leave the nest. During breeding, chaffinches forage on trees for invertebrates, particularly caterpillars, which they provision to their nestlings.
Outside the breeding season, chaffinches are gregarious birds, forming flocks in open countryside where they forage for seeds on the ground. The species is a partial migrant: birds breeding in warmer regions remain sedentary year-round, while those from colder northern areas undertake seasonal movements to winter further south.
Best Time & Places to See It
The chaffinch's extensive range and large populations make it relatively easy to encounter across much of Europe and Asia. For breeding birds with vibrant male plumage, spring and summer visits to woodlands and tree-dotted landscapes are ideal. In winter, look for flocking birds in open countryside, where they are often conspicuous as they forage on the ground.
Photography Tips
Male chaffinches offer excellent photographic opportunities thanks to their colourful plumage and habit of singing from exposed perches—position yourself to capture the blue-grey cap and rust-red underparts in good light. The distinctive white wing bars and white tail sides provide strong compositional elements even in photographs of females or winter-plumaged birds. Early morning during the breeding season is ideal for capturing males on their favourite singing posts.
