Waterbuck

Identification

The waterbuck is a large antelope with a distinctive appearance. Both sexes have a shaggy coat that ranges from brown to grey in colour. Males are distinguished by impressive long, spiral horns that curve backward and then forward, measuring 55–99 cm in length; females lack horns entirely. A key identifying feature is the white elliptical ring on the rump, which is particularly prominent in the defassa variety. The waterbuck's scientific name, Kobus ellipsiprymnus, actually refers to this characteristic white rump marking, derived from the Greek words for "ellipse" and "hind part."

Range & habitat

Waterbucks are found widely across sub-Saharan Africa, with their distribution divided between two varieties. The common waterbuck ranges east of the Rift Valley from southeastern Ethiopia through Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and into southern Africa including Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The defassa waterbuck is found mostly west of the Gregory Rift, ranging from Ethiopia west to Senegal and south to Zambia. These antelope inhabit scrub and savanna areas along rivers, lakes, and valleys, always remaining close to reliable water sources. Their requirement for both grasslands and permanent water creates a sparse, scattered distribution pattern across their range.

Behaviour & diet

Waterbucks are rather sedentary animals that depend heavily on water, unable to tolerate dehydration in hot weather. As gregarious creatures, they form herds of six to thirty individuals, typically organised as either nursery groups of females and offspring or bachelor herds. Males begin displaying territorial behaviour from five years of age, becoming most dominant between six and nine years old. Predominantly grazers, waterbucks are mostly found on grassland. In equatorial regions, breeding occurs throughout the year, though births peak during the rainy season. The gestation period lasts 7–8 months, and females give birth to a single calf.

Best time & places to see it

Waterbucks can be observed year-round across their range in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in protected areas and national parks. The common waterbuck is listed as of least concern by the IUCN, while the defassa waterbuck is near threatened. However, populations of both varieties are in decline, with large populations eliminated from certain habitats due to poaching and human disturbance. Your best opportunities will be in well-managed reserves along river valleys and lakeside grasslands where water and suitable grazing habitat remain abundant and protected.

The waterbuck's distinctive horns and shaggy coat make males particularly photogenic subjects. Their dependence on water means they are predictable animals—position yourself near watering holes and rivers during early morning or late afternoon light for the best opportunities. The white rump marking is an important identifying feature to capture, particularly when photographing defassa waterbucks. Patience will be rewarded, as their sedentary nature means they are likely to remain in predictable locations. Group compositions of nursing herds can also provide compelling images of social behaviour.
