Overview

Begin your day with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or lodge after breakfast at approximately 6:30 AM, followed by a drive to Makasutu Cultural Forest, located on the south bank near the mouth of the River Gambia.

Makasutu is a culturally significant forest reserve, traditionally protected by local kings for its rich flora and fauna. The forest encompasses a variety of habitats, including riverine forest, woodland, bush, and grassland, providing an excellent environment for birdwatching and wildlife observation.

This full-day experience is particularly suited to nature lovers, birdwatchers and photographers, offering an opportunity to discover The Gambia’s diverse flora, fauna and cultural heritage.

Itinerary

Early Morning – Pickup Hotel/Lodge  

After your breakfast your hotel or lodge, we depart at approximately 6:30 AM and travel to Makasutu Cultural Forest 

Morning: Forest Bird watching & Nature Walk

Upon arrival at Makasutu Cultural Forest, we begin with a guided nature walk through the forest, focusing on bird watching and wildlife observation. The forest provides opportunities to observe a wide variety of bird species, as well as monkeys, reptiles and other wildlife. Your guide will share information about the forest ecosystem, local wildlife and the traditional uses of the forest.

During the morning excursion, we continue towards the river, where we board a traditional dugout canoe for a scenic crossing and exploration of the waterways surrounding the forest. Following the canoe experience, we continue our guided walk back towards the forest’s base camp .Along the way, we may encounter traditional palm wine tapping, including the opportunity to observe a local palm wine tapper demonstrating the traditional technique of climbing a palm tree.

Lunch & Cultural Experience

We return to the base camp for lunch and refreshments, allowing time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the forest. During lunch, guests will have the opportunity to experience a traditional cultural performance featuring Jola dancers and drummers, performed beneath the majestic Baobab tree. This cultural presentation provides an engaging introduction to local traditions, music and dance.

Afternoon & Evening Birdwatching

After lunch, we continue the excursion into the bush and grassland areas surrounding the forest, where we conduct our afternoon and evening bird watching session. These different habitats provide opportunities to observe a variety of bird species and wildlife that may not be encountered within the denser forest. As the day’s bird watching experience comes to an end, we begin our return journey to your hotel or lodge.

Depending on the season, weather conditions and daily wildlife activity, species that may be observed include: Birds  White-crested Helmetshrike,  Red-winged Warbler, Snowy-crowned Robin chat, Paradise Flycatcher, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Giant Kingfisher, Whimbrel, Sulphur-breasted Bushshrike, Plovers,  Green Turaco, Starlings, Western Banded Snake Eagle, Herons, Violet Turaco, Barn owl, Bee-eaters, Rollers 

Wildlife

Possible wildlife sightings include:• Guinea baboons, Green vervet monkeys, Red colobus monkeys, Patas monkeys, Nile monitor lizards, West African crocodiles, Mongooses, Other indigenous wildlife,
