Caspian Tern

Identification

The Caspian tern is the world's largest tern species, making it unmistakable in size alone. Adults measure 48–60 cm in length with a impressive wingspan of 127–145 cm. The most striking features are its thick red-orange bill with a small black tip, black cap, and white head and underparts. The upper wings and back are pale grey, while the underwings are pale with dark primary feathers. In flight, look for the less-forked tail compared to other terns and distinctive black wingtips on the underside of the wings. Black legs and a loud, heron-like croak complete the field marks. Notably, Caspian terns retain their black cap even in winter, though white streaking appears on the forehead—a useful distinction from many other tern species.

Range & Habitat

With a scattered subcosmopolitan distribution, Caspian terns breed on large lakes and ocean coasts across North America (including the Great Lakes), Europe (particularly the Baltic and Black seas), Asia, Africa, and Australasia. The global population numbers approximately 50,000 pairs. Migration patterns vary by region: North American birds winter on southern coasts, the West Indies, and northernmost South America, while European and Asian populations move to Old World tropics during the non-breeding season. African and Australasian birds are largely resident or undertake only short-distance movements. Notably, breeding range is expanding northward; in 2016, a successful breeding pair was documented 600 km further north in Alaska than any previous North American record, a trend attributed to global warming. The Baltic Sea population remains a conservation concern due to documented decline.

Behaviour & Diet

Caspian terns are specialized fish hunters, diving for their prey after hovering high over the water before plunging dramatically. They may range up to 60 km from the breeding colony in search of fish and will exploit both freshwater lakes and marine environments. Occasionally they supplement their diet with large insects, the eggs and young of other birds, and rodents. Breeding occurs in spring and summer, with clutches of one to three pale blue-green eggs heavily spotted with brown. Birds may nest in colonies or singly within mixed colonies of other terns and gulls. Nests are simple scrapes on the ground among gravel and sand, or sometimes on vegetation. Incubation lasts 26–28 days, and chicks fledge after 35–45 days. Interestingly, chick plumage varies considerably from pale creamy to darker grey-brown, likely helping parents identify their own offspring during frequent feeding returns.

Caspian terns are most easily found during the breeding season (spring and summer) at their nesting colonies on large lakes and coastal areas. In North America, the Great Lakes region offers reliable viewing opportunities. European birdwatchers should focus on the Baltic and Black Sea regions. Outside breeding season, check southern coasts, particularly in winter months when North American populations congregate there. Migration periods represent excellent viewing windows as birds move between breeding and wintering grounds. Always respect breeding colonies by maintaining appropriate distances and following local guidelines.
