Identification

The Common Nighthawk is a medium-sized bird measuring 22–25 cm long with a distinctive 51–61 cm wingspan. Its most striking features are its large, flattened head with prominent eyes, long slender wings that extend beyond a notched tail, and characteristic white wing patches. The plumage is cryptically patterned in dark grays, blacks, and browns with barring on the sides and abdomen. Males display a white bar on the forked tail. Unlike most nightjars, the Common Nighthawk lacks rictal bristles around its mouth, yet possesses a remarkably large, gaping mouth that belies its small beak—a feature perfectly adapted for aerial insect hunting. The horizontal perching posture and short legs are distinctive, and some observers note superficial similarities to owls.

Field identification is best confirmed by the bird's unmistakable vocalizations rather than visual appearance alone, as its cryptic coloration makes daytime spotting challenging. In flight, the Common Nighthawk is far more conspicuous, displaying a buoyant and erratic aerial pattern characteristic of its insectivorous lifestyle.
