Eastern Crested Guineafowl

Identification

The Eastern Crested Guineafowl is a distinctive member of the guinea fowl family, measuring around 50 cm in length and weighing between 721 and 1,543 grams. Its most striking feature is the prominent black crest adorning the top of its head, composed of distinctive curly feathers that immediately set it apart from other guinea fowl species. The bird's overall plumage is blackish with dense white spotting throughout, creating a bold and eye-catching pattern. Its combination of the characteristic crest and spotted plumage makes it relatively unmistakable in the field, though care should be taken not to confuse it with the similarly-crested Plumed Guinea Fowl, as the names are sometimes misapplied across species.

A particularly charming aspect of their behaviour is the practice of courtship feeding, in which the male will run several metres across the ground to present choice food morsels to his mate—a touching display of pair bonding. During breeding season, the female constructs a well-hidden nest, typically a scrape in long grass or sheltered beneath a bush, where she lays a clutch of usually four or five eggs that range in colour from nearly white to buff.
