Great Reed Warbler

Identification

The great reed warbler is the largest member of the warbler family, a thrush-sized passerine measuring 16–21 cm in length with a wingspan of 25 to 30 cm and weighing 22 to 38 g. Adults display unstreaked brown upperparts contrasting with dull buffish-white chin and underparts. The bird's most distinctive features include a flattened forehead and a strong, pointed bill. Young birds are noticeably richer buff below than adults. The sexes are identical in appearance, exhibiting relatively low sexual dimorphism typical of Old World warblers.

The great reed warbler closely resembles the smaller common reed warbler but is notably larger and possesses a stronger supercilium. Its song is remarkably loud and far-carrying, featuring a distinctive main phrase of chattering and croaking carr-carr-cree-cree-cree-jet-jet, enriched with whistles and vocal mimicry.

Range & Habitat

This migratory species breeds throughout mainland Europe and the Western Palearctic, with two recognized subspecies: the nominate race occurring from Europe to north Iran and northwest Arabia, and A. a. zarudnyi inhabiting southeast European Russia and north Iran to northwest Mongolia and northwest China. The great reed warbler does not breed in Great Britain, where only the smaller common reed warbler occurs, though it appears there as an irregular visitor. Population trends show recent increases around the eastern Baltic Sea, while western populations have become rarer.

During breeding season, the species favors large reed beds, often interspersed with bushes, where birds are territorial. In winter quarters across tropical Africa, great reed warblers are frequently found in large groups, sometimes occupying reed beds to the exclusion of other birds. They also inhabit bush thickets, rice fields, and forest clearings during the non-breeding season. The species migrates north relatively late, with some birds remaining in African winter quarters until late April. Notably, tracking studies have revealed that great reed warblers undertake extraordinary high-altitude flights during migration, with some individuals ascending beyond 6,000 m over the Sahara Desert—the highest recorded passerine ascents to date.

Behaviour & Diet

The great reed warbler is primarily insectivorous, with a diet dominated by insect larvae, moths, dragonflies, damselflies, beetles, and spiders. During breeding season, adults also capture small fish and frogs. Nestlings typically feed on diptera and arachnids. The species supplements its diet with fruit during non-breeding periods and will take small vertebrate prey when available.

Males communicate through distinct song types and engage in both polygynous and monogamous mating systems. On breeding grounds, birds are highly territorial, whereas in winter quarters they congregate in large groups, sometimes achieving near-exclusive occupation of suitable habitat.

Best Time & Places to See It

The great reed warbler's presence depends on season and location. In Europe, the breeding season offers the best opportunity to observe this species in suitable reed-bed habitats, though they arrive relatively late in spring. Breeding birds are found throughout mainland Europe and the Western Palearctic, with populations particularly robust around the eastern Baltic Sea region. The species is absent from Great Britain as a breeding bird, though irregular sightings occur during migration.

Winter observation requires travel to tropical Africa, where the species can be found in large reed beds and associated wetland habitats. This common and widespread bird is classified as least concern by the IUCN, making it relatively accessible for dedicated birdwatchers across its range.

Photography Tips

The great reed warbler's large size and preference for open reed-bed habitats make it more photographable than many smaller warblers. Position yourself near reed beds during breeding season when territorial males are most vocal and active. Early morning offers the best light for capturing the bird's distinctive brown plumage and facial features, particularly the strong supercilium.

The bird's loud, far-carrying song makes it easier to locate than silent species, allowing photographers to anticipate movements through reed beds. Wide-angle shots capturing the bird in its natural reed-bed environment can effectively convey the species' habitat preferences, while closer shots should focus on the strong bill, flattened forehead, and subtle plumage details that distinguish it from the smaller common reed warbler.
