Southern Giant Petrel
Identification
The southern giant petrel is a massive seabird measuring 86 to 99 cm in length with a wingspan reaching 185 to 205 cm. Males are typically larger than females, with body mass ranging from 2.3 to 5.6 kg depending on population and individual variation. The most reliable field mark distinguishing this species from its northern cousin is the greenish tip of its very large yellow bill; the northern giant petrel has a reddish bill tip. The species exhibits two plumage morphs: a dark morph resembling the northern giant petrel, with a light upper breast, head, and neck contrasting with mottled brown plumage; and a rarer light morph displaying an almost entirely white appearance with only slight black speckles. Juveniles of the dark morph begin sooty brown and pale with age. In flight, the southern giant petrel presents a distinctive hunchbacked silhouette, and both species possess strong legs enabling effective movement on land.
Range & Habitat
The southern giant petrel ranges widely across the southern oceans from Antarctica to the subtropics of Chile, Africa, and Australia. This species breeds on numerous islands throughout the southern hemisphere, with major populations on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Orkney Islands, Heard Island, Macquarie Island, the Prince Edward Islands, and the Crozet Islands. Smaller populations occur on the Kerguelen Islands, Gough Island, Tristan da Cunha, and at several locations on the Antarctic continent including Terre Adélie. Its distribution overlaps considerably with the northern giant petrel, though it is generally centered slightly further south. The colonies are visited year round, making these breeding islands accessible to observers throughout the annual cycle.
Behaviour & Diet
Southern giant petrels achieve sexual maturity at six or seven years of age, though they typically do not breed until around ten years old. Breeding season begins in mid-October, with birds forming dispersed colonies from July through September (except in the Falkland Islands, where colonies are notably larger). Each pair lays a single immaculate white egg, incubated for 55 to 66 days with constant parental attendance. Chicks fledge after 104 to 132 days, following a brooding period of two to three weeks after hatching. The species is an opportunistic feeder, consuming fish, krill, squid, offal, and vessel waste in coastal and pelagic waters, often following fishing boats in search of food.
Best Time & Places to See It
The year-round presence of colonies at major breeding islands offers opportunities for observation throughout the calendar. The peak breeding season from October through December provides the best chance to observe adults engaged in breeding activities, territorial behavior, and chick-rearing. Major breeding islands including South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Macquarie Island, and the South Orkney Islands all support accessible populations. At sea, the species can be encountered in coastal and pelagic waters of the southern oceans, particularly near fishing vessels where they congregate to feed.
Photography Tips
The southern giant petrel's large size and distinctive features make it a rewarding photographic subject. The greenish bill tip provides an excellent identifying detail worth capturing in close-up shots. The contrast between light and dark morphs offers compositional variety; the rare light morph is particularly striking against ocean backgrounds. In-flight shots showcase the characteristic hunchbacked silhouette and allow documentation of wing pattern details. Breeding colonies offer opportunities for behavioral photography, including incubation, brooding, and chick-feeding sequences. The species' strong legs and terrestrial mobility present chances to photograph ground-based postures and interactions rarely seen in other petrels.
