Stretching over 4,300 kilometres along the western edge of South America, Chile is one of the world’s most geographically diverse countries. The temperate rainforests of the Lake District and Patagonia are home to ancient Alerce forests, elusive mammals such as the Pudú and Kodkod, and spectacular birds including the Magellanic Woodpecker.

Chile is also internationally renowned for its marine wildlife. Its cold, nutrient-rich Humboldt Current supports abundant seabirds, dolphins, sea lions and whales. Blue, Humpback and Southern Right Whales can all be observed seasonally along the coast, while Humboldt Penguins breed on offshore islands and Black-browed Albatrosses patrol the Southern Ocean. Torres del Paine National Park has become one of the world’s finest locations to observe wild Pumas, while the fjords of southern Patagonia offer exceptional opportunities to encounter marine mammals in dramatic glacial landscapes.

Birdwatching is outstanding throughout the country. More than 500 bird species have been recorded, ranging from Andean Condors soaring above mountain valleys to colourful flamingos inhabiting high-altitude lagoons. Chile’s diverse habitats also support torrent ducks, austral parakeets, hummingbirds, seabirds and numerous endemic species.

Wildlife can be enjoyed year-round, although seasons vary greatly across the country’s immense latitudinal range. Spring and summer bring excellent conditions for Patagonia and the high Andes, while the northern deserts and central regions offer rewarding wildlife encounters throughout much of the year.
