Swainson’s Spurfowl

Identification

Swainson's francolin is a medium-sized gamebird belonging to the pheasant family. Like other francolins, it is characterized by the spurs on its legs—a feature that has earned it the alternative name of Swainson's spurfowl. The species was scientifically described in 1836 by Scottish zoologist Andrew Smith and named in honour of William Swainson, a prominent English ornithologist and naturalist.

Range & Habitat

This southern African francolin inhabits grasslands and woodlands across a wide range of countries including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The species was first documented along riverbanks in the region beyond Kurrichaine (modern-day Kaditshwene) in what is now South Africa's Limpopo province, and it remains associated with open and semi-open habitats throughout its range.

Behaviour & Diet

As a francolin, Swainson's spurfowl is a terrestrial bird adapted to life on the ground in grassland and woodland environments. Like other members of the Galliformes order, it is likely omnivorous, foraging for seeds, insects, and other invertebrates. In Zimbabwe, the local Shona-speaking communities know this bird as the chikwari or horwe and prize it highly as a delicacy sought by hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
