Western Capercaillie

Identification

The western capercaillie is the largest of all extant grouse species and exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism. Males are nearly twice the size of females, making them unmistakable in the field. Cocks measure 74 to 85 centimetres in length with wingspans of 90 to 125 cm and average around 4.1 kg, while hens are considerably smaller at 54–64 cm long and weigh approximately 1.8 kg on average.

Male plumage is dramatic: dark grey to dark brown body feathers contrasted with a distinctive dark metallic green breast, while underparts vary from black to white depending on geographical race. Both sexes display a white spot on the wing bow and a bright red patch of naked skin above each eye—known as "roses" in hunting tradition. Females are more cryptically coloured with brown, black, and silver barring on their upper parts and lighter, buffish-yellow underparts. Both sexes have heavily feathered legs and distinctive toe structures that create a snowshoe effect, leaving characteristic tracks in snow.

Range & Habitat

Found across Europe and the Palearctic, the western capercaillie is a non-migratory, sedentary species inhabiting primarily forested landscapes. Eight recognized subspecies occur throughout its range, from northwestern Spain and the Pyrenees through central Europe, Scandinavia, and Scotland, extending eastward to the Urals and central Siberia. The species shows geographic variation in plumage, with eastern races displaying progressively more white on male underparts compared to the darker western and central European populations.

While the global population is listed as "least concern," central European populations are declining and fragmented, or in some cases possibly extirpated. A native Scottish population became extinct between 1770 and 1785, though the species has since been reintroduced there.

Behaviour & Diet

The western capercaillie is renowned for its spectacular courtship display, which has captivated observers for centuries. As a primarily ground-dwelling forest grouse, it remains closely tied to its woodland habitat throughout the year. The species occasionally hybridises with black grouse, producing hybrids known as Rackelhahn in German nomenclature, and can also interbreed with its closest relative, the black-billed capercaillie of eastern Russia and parts of northern Mongolia and China.

Chicks resemble hens in their cryptic coloration, which provides passive protection against predators, and they display distinctive black crown feathers. By three months of age in late summer, young birds gradually moult toward adult plumage. Both sexes have feathered legs that provide insulation during cold seasons.

Best Time & Places to See It

To observe western capercaillies, focus on forested regions across their Eurasian range, particularly in areas where populations remain stable. Scandinavia, including Scotland's reintroduced populations, offers reliable opportunities. The species' sedentary nature means birds remain in their preferred habitats year-round, though their ground-dwelling behaviour and woodland preference requires patience and careful stalking. Early morning visits to suitable forest habitat increase chances of encounters.

Photography Tips

Photographing western capercaillies presents both challenges and rewards. The extreme size difference between sexes means both males and females offer distinctive photographic subjects—males with their impressive dark metallic plumage and dramatic proportions, females with their intricate cryptic patterning. The bright red eye patches and white wing spots provide useful identification features to capture in images. Their characteristic footprints and tracks in snow offer supplementary photographic opportunities when birds themselves prove elusive.

Given their ground-dwelling forest habitat, wide-angle lenses may be necessary to capture birds in their natural setting. Early morning light works well for highlighting the iridescent green breast of males. Exercise caution and patience, as this is a sensitive species; approach slowly and avoid disturbing displaying birds during the breeding season.
