Cadí Moixeró Nature Park

Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park is one of the largest and most spectacular protected areas in Catalonia, located in the heart of the eastern Pyrenees. Covering more than 41,000 hectares, the park stretches across the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida, forming a dramatic landscape of rugged limestone cliffs, deep valleys, alpine meadows, dense forests, and soaring mountain peaks. Established in 1983, it protects an exceptional variety of ecosystems and serves as an important ecological corridor between the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees.

The park is dominated by two impressive mountain ranges: the Serra del Cadí and the Serra del Moixeró, connected by the famous Tancalaporta Pass. Its highest peak, Vulturó, rises to 2,648 meters, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding mountains. The striking north-facing cliffs of the Cadí range are among the most iconic geological features in Catalonia and attract hikers, climbers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts throughout the year.

Cadí-Moixeró is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity. Its forests of Scots pine, black pine, beech, fir, and oak provide habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The park is one of the best places in Catalonia to observe mountain species such as the Pyrenean chamois, red deer, wild boar, European roe deer, and the elusive European wildcat. Smaller mammals including marmots, foxes, badgers, pine martens, and various bat species also inhabit the area.

Birdwatchers are particularly attracted by the park’s rich birdlife. The spectacular cliffs offer ideal nesting sites for birds of prey, including the Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, and one of Europe’s most iconic scavengers, the Bearded Vulture. Griffon Vultures frequently soar above the valleys, while alpine species such as Wallcreepers and Alpine Accentors can also be found in suitable habitats.

The park offers hundreds of kilometres of well-marked hiking trails suitable for all levels, from gentle forest walks to demanding mountain ascents. Popular destinations include Pedraforca, the Cadí cliffs, and numerous scenic viewpoints that showcase the park’s extraordinary landscapes throughout every season.
