Identification

Bonelli's eagle is a fairly large, medium-sized eagle with distinctive feathered legs that mark it as a member of the booted eagle subfamily. Total length ranges from 55 to 74 cm, with females notably larger than males—displaying the reverse sexual dimorphism common to birds of prey. Males have wingspans of 143 to 163 cm, while females reach 156 to 180 cm. The species' scientific name, fasciata, refers to the bands or stripes visible on its plumage. Among Aquila eagles, Bonelli's is notably smaller than the golden eagle complex but larger than the African hawk-eagle, with which it shares superficial similarity.

Range & Habitat

Bonelli's eagle has an impressively broad distribution spanning southern Europe, Africa along the montane perimeter of the Sahara Desert, and across the Indian subcontinent to Indonesia. In Eurasia, its range extends from Portugal in the west to southeastern China and Thailand in the east. Two subspecies exist: the nominate form throughout Eurasia, and A. f. renschi in the Lesser Sunda Islands, which is notably smaller and more boldly marked.

This species typically inhabits hilly or mountainous terrain with rocky walls and crags, ranging from sea level to 1,500 meters in elevation. It favours open to wooded landscapes across arid to semi-moist climates. As a resident breeder throughout most of its range, Bonelli's eagle maintains year-round presence in suitable habitat.

Behaviour & Diet

Bonelli's eagle is primarily a specialist predator, showing strong preference for European rabbits, galliforms, and pigeons. However, it demonstrates partial opportunism and will readily switch to hunting a wide variety of birds when staple prey populations decline or become locally scarce. This dietary flexibility has likely aided its survival across diverse ecosystems.

As a resident breeder throughout most of its range, Bonelli's eagle can be observed year-round in appropriate habitat.
