Cabañeros National Park

Cabañeros National Park is one of Spain’s finest wildlife destinations and one of the best-preserved examples of Mediterranean forest and scrubland in Europe. Located in the heart of Castilla–La Mancha, between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo, the park protects more than 40,000 hectares of ancient woodlands, rolling hills, river valleys, and vast open grasslands known as rañas. Often referred to as the “Spanish Serengeti,” these open plains provide exceptional opportunities to observe large mammals and birds in a natural and remarkably undisturbed environment.

The park is particularly famous for its thriving populations of Red Deer, Roe Deer, and Wild Boar, which are frequently seen grazing across the expansive grasslands or moving through the dense oak forests. During autumn, the spectacular red deer rut fills the valleys with the unmistakable sound of roaring stags, creating one of Spain’s most impressive wildlife spectacles. Smaller mammals such as Red Fox, European Otter, and Genet also inhabit the park, although they are more elusive.

Cabañeros is equally renowned among birdwatchers. The combination of extensive forests, cliffs, rivers, and open plains supports an outstanding diversity of birds. The park is one of the best places in Spain to observe the endangered Spanish Imperial Eagle and the iconic Cinereous Vulture, both of which breed within its boundaries. Griffon Vultures soar over the mountains, while Black Storks nest in secluded valleys. Other notable species include Golden Eagle, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Black Kite, Red Kite, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, and numerous woodland birds such as Iberian Green Woodpecker and Hawfinch.

The landscape itself is as impressive as its wildlife. Ancient cork oak and holm oak forests cover much of the park, interspersed with Mediterranean scrub rich in rockrose, rosemary, and heather. Seasonal streams and the Estena and Bullaque rivers create important habitats for amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic birds, while the surrounding mountains offer breathtaking viewpoints over one of Spain’s most pristine natural landscapes.

Visitors can explore Cabañeros through a network of well-maintained hiking trails, scenic driving routes, and guided 4x4 safaris that provide access to restricted areas rich in wildlife.
