Identification

The Spectacled Warbler is a very small warbler with distinctive features that give it its common name. Adult males are particularly recognizable, displaying a grey head contrasted with a white eye-ring—the "spectacles" that inspired the species name. Both sexes are brown above and buff below, with chestnut wing patches and a characteristic white throat. The species is intermediate in coloration between the Common Whitethroat and Tristram's Warbler, and immature birds can be confusingly similar to both the whitethroat and the western subalpine warbler, making field identification challenging for less experienced observers. The song is a fast, high warble that may aid identification.

Range & Habitat

The Spectacled Warbler breeds across a substantial Mediterranean range: northwest Africa, southwest Europe from Iberia to Italy, and further east across the eastern Mediterranean islands and coastal regions. Different populations show varying migratory habits—birds in Africa are mainly resident year-round, while other populations migrate more widely across north and west Africa and Egypt in winter. The species is a rare vagrant to northern and western Europe. It also occurs on several Atlantic islands, including the Canary Islands (where it is quite common except on El Hierro), Madeira, and Cape Verde Islands.

Like other warblers, the Spectacled Warbler is insectivorous, feeding on small invertebrates as it forages in its preferred habitat.
