Greylag Goose

Identification

The greylag goose is the largest and bulkiest of the grey geese, easily distinguished by its mottled greyish-brown plumage with a darker head and paler breast and belly. An orange or pink bill with a white or brown nail, combined with bright pink legs and feet, makes identification straightforward. Adults display a distinctive 'concertina' pattern of folds in the feathers on their necks, while juveniles lack the black speckling on the breast and belly found in adults and have greyish legs. In flight or when stretching its wings, you'll notice the pale grey forewing and rump contrasting sharply with darker flight feathers. Measuring 74 to 91 centimetres in length with a wingspan of 147 to 180 centimetres, males are noticeably larger than females.

Range & Habitat

Greylag geese have a widespread Palearctic distribution across Europe and Asia. The western subspecies breeds in Iceland, Scandinavia, and much of northern and central Europe, while the eastern subspecies ranges across Asia to northeastern China. Historically, European birds migrated south to winter in Mediterranean regions and North Africa, but many populations now remain in their breeding areas year-round, even in Scandinavia. Asian populations winter in Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, northern India, Bangladesh, and China.

During breeding season, these geese favour moorlands, marshes, areas around lakes, and coastal islands. In winter, they occupy semi-aquatic habitats including estuaries, marshes, and flooded fields, often venturing onto agricultural land to feed.

Behaviour & Diet

Greylag geese are highly social birds that travel to their northerly breeding grounds each spring. They normally mate for life, nesting on the ground among vegetation. A typical clutch contains three to five eggs, which the female incubates while both parents defend and rear the young. Family groups stay together during autumn migration, separating the following year. The species produces a loud, distinctive cackling call—"aahng-ung-ung"—uttered both on the ground and in flight, with a flock sounding remarkably like baying hounds. Individual geese can recognize other known birds by their voices.

These geese are primarily grazers, feeding extensively on grass and often consuming agricultural crops during winter. Their diet and grazing habits make them familiar sights in rural landscapes across their range.

Best Time & Places to See It

Spring and autumn migrations offer excellent opportunities to observe greylag geese in large flocks. However, many populations are now resident year-round, particularly in southern England and urban areas, making them accessible throughout the year. Winter visits to estuaries, marshes, and flooded agricultural fields—especially in traditional wintering grounds across southern Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa—provide reliable viewing.

Photography Tips

Photograph the striking pale grey forewing and rump by positioning yourself to capture birds in flight or with wings stretched. The distinctive orange-pink bill and bright pink legs provide excellent colour contrast against the mottled grey plumage. The adult's 'concertina' neck pattern is a unique identifying feature worth capturing at close range. Large flocks in migration offer dramatic compositional opportunities, while the pale breast contrasting with the darker head creates strong subject definition. Early morning light on flooded fields or estuaries will enhance the subtle tonal variations in their plumage.
